Air Conditioner Maintenance
How to maintain your AC unit
An air conditioner is a relatively large investment – you would probably like to keep it for a while. That said, maintaining your air conditioner will ensure the unit lasts as long as possible. There are a number of things you can do to ensure your air conditioner remains in the best condition possible for many years to come.
Steps to keep your air conditioner in good working condition
- Change or clean the furnace filter once a month, especially throughout the summer months when dust and allergens are constantly circulating in the air.
- Keep your plants as far away from the air conditioning unit as possible. At least one foot is a good guideline.
- Vacuum registers and air vents on a regular basis.
- Have your ductwork cleaned by a professional every few years.
- Keep all furniture and drapes away from registers.
- Always run your air conditioner before you begin using it regularly. This should occur in late spring or early summer. Not only will this be easier on your unit but it will also buy you time should your air conditioner fail to operate in an effective manner.
- Always check for obstructions in front of your air conditioner such as newspapers or leaves, which may prevent the air from being distributed effectively throughout the room.
- Never use water to clean your air conditioner. Homeowners are strongly discouraged from using water to clean their air conditioners because the water can potentially damage the internal components of the unit. The use of water also presents the risk of electrical shock and possible shorting of electrical equipment.
Failure to recognize and acknowledge these measures will likely damage your air conditioner, possibly permanently.
The maintenance routine costs next to nothing and most steps only require a few minutes of your time. There is very little effort involved. These small steps can go a long way in the performance and effectiveness of your air conditioning unit. You spent the time researching and comparing different air conditioners; you spent the money for the unit; you might as well spend the time to ensure it remains in working condition.
