Product Reviews: Air Purifiers

Getting the air you want

As it goes with so many consumer products, the only people who want to tell you about air purifiers are people with some form of vested interest:

  • People who want to sell you the most expensive air purifier they can
  • People who don't have your interests at heart
  • People with a “bone to pick” with one company or one kind of air purifier.

We're one of the few Internet consumer guides that are willing to take an objective look at air purification companies, their products and their claims. Your criteria for purchasing an air purifier are probably many-fold: you likely care about cost, value, maintenance requirements, compatibility, availability and more when it comes to buying an air cleaner for your home or business.

You may also be concerned about the following issues:

  • Air purifiers for businesses are much more expensive and possibly a more critical consideration than those for residences.
  • Budget air purifiers entail a narrowing of choice: how do you get true value out of your finite dollars?
  • If you own pets, special considerations go into buying an air purifier for your home.
  • For traveling, size, portability and efficiency are especially important.
  • If pollen, mold and / or smoke are a problem for you, you might need to think through your choice of air purification differently.
  • For your home, you might also consider the possibility of a whole-home air purifier if your purification needs are considerable.

Before choosing an air purifier, it's important to balance two aspects:

  • Learn as much as you can about all the different kinds of air purifiers.
  • Bear in mind your original reason for looking into air purifiers or air cleaning. Don't let yourself get smothered by the overwhelming number of choices.

You may find an air purifier that is more versatile than what you originally had in mind and that may suit your home or business even better than the air purifier you were originally looking for. Conversely, you may find that the purifier you had in mind won't actually meet your needs or won't suit the room you wanted it for. Know which contaminants are your biggest concern and how much space you need to purify, and you should have no trouble narrowing your options to the one that's best for you.
