HEPA Air Filters
The most effective air filter on the market
Depending on the type of air treatment product used in your home, a HEPA replacement filter may mean the difference between an effective system and an ineffective one. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters are specially designed filters capable of capturing over 99 percent of the contaminants in your air.
Using a small woven mesh design, HEPA filter holes are small enough to catch the smallest particles(0.3 microns) but large enough that they still allow sufficient air flow. This is a hard technique to master; in fact, HEPA is the only filter to have done so. Thus, HEPA is one of the most popular filters in today's market.
Although HEPA filters are extremely effective in producing desired results, they will become ineffective if they are not changed on a regular basis. As the contaminants reach the filter, they are trapped and not allowed through. They basically stick to the filter and remain there until the filter is changed. If the filter is not replaced, it will become ineffective because the captured contaminants will prevent the air from flowing through.
It is difficult to determine exactly when a HEPA filter requires replacing. A HEPA filter becomes ineffective when there are too many contaminants and particles in the filter, but the timeline depends on the quality of air in your home (i.e. how many contaminants are in it to begin with). If you have relatively healthy air in the beginning, your filters are likely to last longer, whereas if you have poor air quality in your home, your filters will need to be changed more regularly.
When shopping for a HEPA replacement filter, make sure the type you buy is a true HEPA filter. Other types may read “HEPA-like”, which is not the same and is usually considerably less effective than true HEPA styles. True HEPA replacement filters can cost anywhere from $25 to $350 depending on the type of system you own and the brand of filter you buy.

The HEPA air filter was invented during the Manhattan Project as part of the gas mask technology intended to filter out all fatal contaminants related to radiation.
