Ion Purifiers

Removing dust, odors and pollutants

Negative ions are actually a positive boost. An ionizing air purifier improves your health in a number of ways. Researchers have long held that ions alleviate sleep disorders, tension, depression and other such problems. An ion air purifier replenishes a room's negative ions.

Healthy outdoor air possesses several thousand ions per cubic centimeter. Take a trip into the woods, and you'll be exposing yourself to ion levels as high as 5,000 per square centimeter – and your body will love you for it. An un-ionized home possesses fewer than 200 ions per square centimeter, and in some homes, the level is even lower.

Home ion air purifiers remove dust, odors and pollutants. Many are compact in design. Their biggest advantage is that they require no maintenance. They will, however, require you to vacuum more often.

Are there negatives to negative ion producers?

There is some controversy over whether ion air purifiers really do what they say. Some detractors charge that ion air purifiers only produce a fresh scent through the production of ozone, simply making it seem like “fresh air.” It's true that ion air purifiers are not the best method of air purification, and they certainly aren't as cheap as simply opening your windows. However, we have found that most of the negative charges against negative ions (yes, the pun is intended) come from people who have an interest in selling you products that are more expensive and make claims that are even more misleading.

An effective ion air purifier will neutralize many of the pollutants floating in your air (mold spores, mildew and more), but it would be best used in tandem with another air filter or air purification system. Also, the best ion air purifiers do not, in fact, produce ozone at all.

If you are going to purchase an ion air purifier, be sure to research the product thoroughly and compare it to other options (purifiers, smoke eaters, etc.) Closely read warranties and return policies attached to your ion air purifier or other air purification product.
