Air Purifier Maintenance

It's all about the air filters

Air purifiers (at least most models) will only function properly if you follow the proper maintenance procedures required. If you do not want to spend a lot of time maintaining your air purifier, look for models clearly marked “low maintenance.”

The biggest responsibility associated with air purifiers is changing the filters. If the filters are not changed on a regular basis, you can permanently damage your air purifier.

The maintenance routines vary from model to model, but general cleaning is an essential part of any routine. Dust tends to accumulate, which can potentially cause damage to your unit. Try to clean it off at least once every two weeks (more often if you have time). Keeping your air purifier in good condition will ensure a longer life and better day-to-day performance.

Electrostatic filters usually require less maintenance than other types of filters. Because these filters use a three-step process to function, it takes longer for the filter to fill up. These are the best choice for individuals who don't have time to fuss over filter maintenance but live in homes that require an air filter.

In general, filter maintenance does not require a lot of work, especially considering the positive effect on your life. Filters need to be changed on a regular basis (every 2-3 months, on average), but it only takes a few minutes to change them.

For those of you who really don't have the time to care for an air purifier - even a low-maintenance one - there are many models that require “no maintenance.” These have permanent filters, so they save owners the time and cost of filter replacement. However, the initial cost is much higher.

The time, energy and expense of air purifier maintenance depends very much on the type:

  • HEPA filters require replacement every one to five years, depending upon the contaminant load.
  • HEPA filters with activated carbon require more frequent replacement.
  • Ozone generators and Ion purifiers require no maintenance and no filter replacement.
  • Electrostatic purifiers must have their collection plates cleaned often, and their particle capture efficiency decreases over time.
  • UV sterilizers require that the bulb be replaced annually, which can be expensive. They should also be cleaned intermittently.
