Replacement Air Filters
Buy your filters in bulk
Replacing the filter is an important part of maintaining your air purification system, but it can also be a hassle. Many dealers try to alleviate this hassle by including replacement filters with your initial purchase – usually about 12 months' worth. This can save you time and money in the short run, but eventually, you're going to have to find and buy more replacement filters.
The cheapest and easiest way to buy filters is in bulk. Buying in bulk saves you money, and it also saves you time, since you will need to shop for replacement filters less often. Look for an "annual filter replacement package", or ask the dealer if there's a discount for buying a large quantity of filters at once.
Of course, replacement filters are also available individually. The cost and availability of the filter will depend largely on the type and model of air purifier you have. Before you purchase a filter, make sure it is compatible with your system.
If you haven't already purchased an air purification system, remember that the cost of the replacement filters can raise the total cost of the product immensely. Research the average cost of the replacement filters, multiply that by the number of times the filter needs to be replaced each year and then multiply that number by the average lifespan (in years) of the system: this should give you a pretty good idea of what the system will cost to maintain (not including repairs, of course). Compare this cost between brands and models to find a system that is truly cost-effective. Don't forget to factor in availability, though – the cheapest filter might not be such a good deal if you have to drive to the next town or city to purchase it.
Be sure to check with your dealer to find out whether other manufacturers make filters that are compatible with your system. It helps to have a few different options, in case one is sold out or otherwise unavailable when you need it.
Inspecting your air purifiers and replacing your filter
For larger systems, such as whole-home air purifiers, you may have an automatic filter replacement program or an arrangement for an annual checkup of your system. If not, you will need to do your own checkup on the filter and other system components (not recommended).
If you do receive a professional checkup, be aware that some recommendations made will be critical to the maintenance of your system, but others will be optional. Be sure that you are clear concerning what needs to be done and what is merely recommended. Quite often, service companies will make the bulk of their profit by selling you secondary merchandise you may not really need.
