Simple Steps to Cleaner Air

How to reduce indoor air pollution

Clean air is essential to a healthy living environment for your family. As many as 50 percent of illnesses in the United States are caused by indoor air pollution, which could have been avoided if more households used air purification systems. In order to keep the air in your home clean, there are a number of simple steps you can take. These include:

  1. Keep Your Home Clean – Making sure your house is clean at all times will greatly improve the quality of air in your home. This means dusting and vacuuming on a regular basis (at least 2-3 times per week).
  2. Open Windows – If you open your windows and air out your home, there will be less chance of pollutants lingering in the air. The fresh, outdoor air will replace the stuffy, contaminated indoor air, leaving you with a better living environment. Of course, you may not want to open the windows if the air outside is more contaminated than the air inside (during hay fever season, for example).
  3. Buy Plants – Plants are great at removing indoor air pollutants. Spider plants have been proven particularly effective at cleaning indoor air; English ivy and peace lilies are also good air cleaners. The general rule is two plants per hundred-square-foot area.
  4. Reduce Chemical Contamination – For example, dry-cleaned clothes have many particles and pollutants attached to them. If you put them away in the plastic, particles never have a chance to detach from the clothing. Even so, it is still a good idea to air out your dry cleaning before you put it away. If you wish, you can put it back in the plastic before you tuck it back into your closet. Dry cleaning is just one source of chemical contaminants that can reduce the quality of air in your home.
  5. Buy an Air Purifier– An air purifier is perhaps the best way to enhance the air in your home because it is designed specifically to cleanse indoor air. There are many types of air purifier, so make sure you research all products and companies carefully before making any purchases.
  6. Buy a Dehumidifier – Dehumidifiers remove the moisture from indoor air. This moisture aids the growth of mold and mildew and may also contain microorganisms and other contaminants.

These are just a few of the steps you can take to ensure your home is a healthy living environment for you and your family. It is important to do everything in your power to make your home as safe as possible. Overlooking or disregarding the quality of air in your home can have detrimental effects on your and your loved ones' health.
