Bar Stool Heights

Don't get too high on your bar stool

When it comes to buying bar stools, you have to make sure they are the right height for your bar, counter or table. You need to make sure you measure the countertop accurately to leave the right amount of clearance between the top of the seat and bottom of the counter. Seat heights on bar stools are measured from the floor to the top of the seat, not the top of the seat back. The first thing you need to do is measure the distance from the ground to the table or countertop at which you'll be sitting.

Bar stools come in different heights, but a 30-inch stool is generally regarded as a standard height for the average adult. One reason for this is that kitchen counters are typically 40 to 44 inches high. This gives most adults 8 to 12 inches of thigh room between the seat and the counter. Of course, if the table or counter you're sitting at is quite a bit higher or shorter than 44 inches you will need a higher or shorter bar stool in order to sit comfortably.

You can also get 24 to 26-inch bar stools, ideal for counters that are about 36 to 39 inches high. If the counter is 45 inches or higher, a 34-inch bar stool is usually the answer to reaching the counter comfortably. Extra tall bar stools measuring 36 inches are useful for tall people who aren't sitting at a bar or countertop. Standard bar stools are too short for tall people to sit comfortably, as the foot rail is situated too high up the stool. These tall stools are also good for counters that are 45 to 48 inches high.

It's not recommended to use a 36-inch stool if you're sitting at a standard-height table or counter, as you need the 8 to 12 inches of room between the top of the seat and the bottom of the countertop or table. However, there are no rules when it comes to bar stool height; you should be sitting on the size you are most comfortable with. You can also get adjustable-height barstools and custom-made models.

Recommended Bar Stool Seat Heights:

  • 30-inch standard bar stools for 40 to 44-inch counters.
  • Extra tall 34 to 36- inch bar stools are for 45 to 50-inch high counters.
