Lennox Furnaces

Innovating since 1895

Another of the giant global names in heating, ventilation and cooling, Lennox has been around for over a century, building and inventing HVAC systems. Lennox was started in 1895 by Dave Lennox as a vehicle for him to market his newest invention - the world's first riveted-steel furnace. However, shortly afterwards, Dave sold his company and furnace designs to D.W. Norris so that he could get back to his passion - the more enjoyable business of inventing.

This spirit of invention and innovation remains with the company today, evidenced by its slogan, "Innovation Never Felt So Good." Lennox has had numerous firsts, including the first residential forced-air heating system, the first attic-or-crawlspace-installed furnace system for residential use and the first "hammock-style" furnace air filters.

Because of this spirit of innovation, which seems to be so important at the company, Lennox has traditionally been able to claim ownership to some of the most advanced technologies in the HVAC industry. According to homeowner reviews, though, it seems that a side effect of this spirit of innovation may be a greater number of repairs and units that do not function correctly after only a few years.

To be sure, Lennox has furnace and boiler units with high reliability and endurance, but, as with anything, the highest-tech and most innovative units often include the newest and least well-understood technology. This can lead to equipment problems, as well as contribute to maintenance mishaps if the service technician does not know the equipment very well.

Lennox offers a mostly full line of natural gas or oil-fired furnaces and boilers for residential use, as well as residential heat pumps and larger commercial heating and cooling systems.

The bottom line is that Lennox's commitment to innovation has helped propel the industry forward at numerous points throughout the past century, and its furnace technology is often leading-edge. However, it may be worth your while to examine some of the company's older units that have been in service longer, or at least some of its simpler units, in order to ensure the long and worry-free life of your home heating equipment.
