Batteries
Everything you need to know
Batteries are everywhere in our lives today. No longer confined to toys, flashlights and other household tools, batteries now provide the power for many of our modern communication and transportation devices. As cell phones, laptop computers, digital cameras and other electronic devices continue to become smaller and mobile technology continues to grow in popularity, battery technology has made significant advances to meet the power demands of today’s consumer electronics market.
Batteries use powerful microtechnology to deliver electricity to devices that require battery power to function. Batteries generate power because they contain chemicals that cause a reaction. The chemical reaction creates electricity, which allows the battery to become a source of energy.
Batteries can only supply energy for a specific period of time. However, the life span of batteries is varied and is contingent upon the quality of the battery, its technological sophistication, and the amount of power the device the battery is powering requires to optimally function. A battery dies and is no longer useful because the chemical reaction it relies on to generate power has ceased; consequently, the batteries can no longer be used.In the case of rechargeable batteries, the chemical components are returned to their original state during the recharging process, so that the discharge can start again from the beginning. Batteries that can’t be recharged must be disposed of in the proper way.
Batteries are a convenient source of power, but they can also be problematic. Some batteries suffer from a phenomenon called the "memory effect." Some, such as over 5 million laptop batteries that were recently recalled, pose the danger of overheating and starting a fire.
Becoming educated about the different types of batteries and how to care for them will benefit you in the long-run. Not only will you save money by getting the best performance out of your batteries, but you will also save yourself the aggravation of having your batteries die at inconvenient times.
When shopping for batteries, make sure that you purchase the correct batteries to operate your electronic device. In this instance, size does matter and the type of battery you purchase will have a direct effect on the performance of your electronic device.
