Buying GPS

Now is the time to buy a system

There is a global positioning system made for your particular needs, whether you are a commuter, traveler, outdoor enthusiast, athlete, boater or pilot. Selecting a unit can be difficult, though. GPS technology has developed into a variety of consumer products. With all of the different options and products available you can spend weeks trying to pick the right device and service.

What makes a good global positioning system?

Some features you have to consider when rating the quality of a GPS or device include:

  • WAAS
  • Channels
  • Unit features
  • Price

WAAS

There are some features you will find essential to the practical use of a GPS unit. WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) is a useful feature if you are going to be using the global positioning system for outdoor activities. WAAS helps to increase the accuracy of your handheld unit so that you can reliably map your location and decide on a route.

Channels

The number of channels available to your GPS device is also an important consideration. Since the global positioning system runs on satellite signals, the more signals you are able to access the more accurate and reliable the information you receive will be.

A system with anything less than twelve channels will make it difficult to use global positioning systems when you are traveling away from city centers or are surrounded by obstacles like wooded areas or tall buildings. The time it takes to connect to a satellite signal (called acquisition time ) is another feature to keep in mind for the convenience of using your system.

GPS unit features

Depending on what you will be using your system for, you may also be looking at the features of the device itself. Water and weatherproofing will be important for outdoor enthusiasts and boaters. The size of the unit will be a feature of consideration for hikers and consumers who will be carrying the unit on their person. Voice and handsfree capabilities are options that drivers might look for in an automotive unit. There are a variety of global positioning units that are all manufactured for different uses.

Price

Price range is a variable factor in selecting a GPS unit. Global positioning devices can cost anywhere from $200 to over $2000. The price of the unit depends on the number of features included. Basic handheld models can come with as little as mapping, navigation and a compass tool. The more elaborate units have innumerable features that increase the mapping and navigation capabilities to include communication, tracking and personal entertainment. The average consumer can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $500 on a versatile GPS unit.

Making a choice

A GPS device can be an important purchase. It will make daily commuting, long distance traveling and outdoor adventures easier and more fun. You don't even need to know how to use a compass or map to accurately locate yourself and your destination. There are a lot of choices involved in purchasing a GPS unit, though, so thorough research is required in selecting the appropriate device.

I am new to a GPS but bought one on sale, a Nextar, that seems to have almost all the amenities listed above. I am very happy with it as I can now visit my sons in different cities in my state of Indiana.
