Aviation GPS

Global positioning in the air

There are very specific requirements for users of aviation GPS. In contrast to automotive GPS, there are no roads, streets, or addresses in the air on which to base your mapping and navigation. There are also different types of information required for an airplane trip and numerous obstacles that are specifically air based. With aviation global positioning system units, air navigation is more accurate and information is more readily available.

Aviation GPS is not expensive. Many of the less expensive handheld portable units come with air compatible capabilities and can be mounted on the windshield of the plane. Aviation specific GPS receivers are focused on ease of use, with large touch screens and voice commands. This allows pilots to keep their attention on flying the plane rather than trying to figure out how to work the device.

Accessories to make your flight better

Accessories for aviation global positioning systems are meant to keep a firm satellite signal in all locations and all weather conditions. GPS antennas are available for the outside of the plane. Antennas allow your receiver to connect with more satellites and retain that connection more strongly. There are also power adapters available which will keep the device well powered, able to connect to and hold a signal.

Aeronautical databases are an important feature for aviation GPS systems. These databases can come standard with aviation specific devices, or can be purchased as additional software for the handheld models. These databases include information vital to air travel, such as building height and other obstruction specifics, airport locations and approach paths. Some databases will include taxiway map data and other topographical area maps. Moving maps are also important for air travel, so that the pilot can keep track of location in real time.

Aviation global positioning systems also take into consideration the greater possibility of international travel. Maps can include data such as borders and boundaries, cities and interstates. The system can also keep track of when you are traveling through an area and update weather and other flight information.

Global positioning systems are an important innovation for air travel. The installation of a GPS unit in a plane makes travel easier and more accessible. Planning plane trips and navigating through the air is safer and more convenient with the amount of aeronautical information that is available with these systems.
