Personal safety

Used with a personal portable unit, GPS tracking ensures personal safety by providing location details for 911 operators. The units are sometimes referred to as personal locators. They may have two way radio or cellular capabilities to allow users to contact emergency numbers. The GPS unit will record the location, date and time of an incident for further information. The GPS tracking device keeps you connected at all times.

Theft deterrence

Automotive GPS users will appreciate the theft deterrence abilities of tracking systems. Would be thieves know that GPS equipped vehicles are easily located. Sometimes called automatic vehicle location, GPS tracking can be used to indicate location, time and distance of vehicle travel.

Consumers can set up "geofences" that notify users when the vehicle has left a certain area. Tracking information can offer a mapped location, street address and historical data about the movement of the vehicle. This information can be used by law enforcement to locate stolen vehicles.

Child monitoring and communication

GPS tracking systems are ideal for parents who are unable to be with their children. The GPS tracking device can set up geofence, which will notify users when the unit has moved outside of a predetermined area. Ideal for school security, field trips, or social activities where children may be unsupervised, GPS tracking allows parents and guardians peace of mind. They are able to monitor the location of their children. Some services will also provide an internet connection that lets parents map that location. This can prove especially valuable in the case of missing children and emergency situations.

How tracking works

There are two common forms of GPS tracking. These include passive tracking and real time tracking. Passive tracking stores data and records the information gathered by a portable unit. This information can include speed, location and time frames of the travel of a device. Passive tracking is best for informational purposes and lets users know when and where vehicles or people have traveled.

Real time tracking is used by mobile GPS units and locates the unit itself. It can communicate global positioning information to a central control unit. Similar to passive tracking, real time tracking gathers speed, location and timing information. With real time tracking, though, this information is passed on as the unit is traveling for constant real time monitoring.

Tracking is a convenient and safe way to monitor travel and location. Useful in a variety of monitoring situations, tracking devices are a popular feature of the GPS.

Dear sirs: I have a very serious issue. I have a grandchild who is missing. She has texted other people only to say she is okay but we do not know where she is. She has a cell phone and I was told all phones have gps tracking. I have called every cell phone company but have not succeeded in getting any help. She has been reported as missing but I am helpless as to how I can determine where she is. She also has a laptop that is somehow connected to that cell phone. Please tell me if there is anyway to use her cell phone to track her. Thank you for listening to me - I do not know what else to do.

Your product works well in the U.S. I purchased the Nuvi200 Garmin series to use in Chicago, Il. but I'm now staying in the Province of Ontario, which borders New York State. When I click, Where to? and then Address, the Spell State/Province window opens but when I key in the Province, Ontario Canada, no matches found message comes up. Question: How do I get directions in the Canadian Provinces?

I have two children that have ADHDA and they like to wondedr off and so time we have trouble finding them so we are looking from away to be able to keepup with them better. We are worry that we may not be able to find someday or they gat hurt really bad before we are able to find them. We they wonder off we have to usually call in family and the police to help find.

I have recently been diagnosed with a medical condition that would require that, in an emergency situation, my friend could find me by looking up where I am using (GPS) to my cell phone. But I have a very inexpensive cell phone and cannot afford a phone with GPS or do not know if my phone even has GPS. Since I am a single woman, I would like to obtain information on how I could actually be located if I had to either dial 911 from my cell phone, or if I had to send a text message to my friend, indicating I needed my friend to dial 911 for me. How do I get GPS tracking on myself for safety reasons?

We have a 24 year old Autistic Son who used to run away, not knowing where he was, was terrifying because he had no fears from anything including cars. Once he got away and was fasinated by the local GO Train and ended up at the station when the police found him and it was lucky for us that a train had not come yet because it was one of those pay as you go deals so he could have been miles away before anyone found him plus he wasn't verbal at that point. I wish the technology was available back then and am glad its here now because it will still give us peace of mind now when he goes out with his adult day program who never fill out his communication book to tell us where he has been in the course of the day. Looking for technology that would allow parents to chip their children. Yes, implant a chip and giving us piece of mind from abduction fear. I would not need to track them as I trust my kids but not everyone else!! Do you ever think this will come to pass?

Several friends across the country and I use Garmin E-trex devices to record the GPS coordinates for the graves of Medal of Honor recipients. Some of these graves have been "lost to history," and we have been recording as many as we can locate and visit.
