ATV Clothing

What to wear while riding your ATV

It can sometimes be tempting to go ATV riding in the summer in just a pair of shorts and T-shirt, but what you should do is wear clothing that protects your body. If you're using the ATV to help you out with farming or agricultural work, obviously you're not going to get decked out in motocross riding gear and protective gear, but you should still make sure your arms and legs are properly covered. And never ride without an ATV helmet, no matter how short a distance you may be traveling or what type of work you're doing.

If you do want to get decked out in the latest ATV gear, there's a lot to choose from. You can wear specially designed motocross jerseys, pants, boots, gloves, socks, vests and jackets. These items will also provide your body with basic protection from most of the elements. However, if you want to wear some added protection, you can purchase ATV protective gear.

If you're not wearing specialty clothing, then make sure you dress according to the weather conditions and the terrain conditions. If it's hot and sunny out, wear a breathable and slightly loose-fitting long-sleeve shirt as well as a lighter pair of pants. Make sure the clothing isn't too baggy, as it may get caught on the handlebars or on another part of the ATV. If the weather looks unpredictable, you should take along some rain gear with you. It's also a good idea to dress in layers, so you can take clothes off and add them on according to the conditions.

If you're going on an overnight trip, you should always take along extra clothing in case it gets wet. Make sure your footwear has heels on it to help prevent your feet from slipping off of the foot pegs. Also make sure your shoes or boots are sturdy and comfortable, because if you do break down in the middle of nowhere, you could end up walking a considerable distance before finding help.

If you know you're going to be riding through mud and / or water, you should make sure your clothing is designed for this to keep you as dry as possible. Riding an ATV can be a lot of fun, but if you happen to get lost out in the wilderness when you're cold and wet, it could lead to trouble. Wearing the proper ATV clothing is especially important for winter riding, as frostbite and hypothermia can set in very quickly.
