ATV Protective Gear
How to prevent bumps, cuts and bruises
If you race ATVs, or would just like to give your body some extra protection while riding, you can purchase some protective gear. If you're teaching a child or beginner how to ride, they should also wear added protection in case of a mishap. You can start out by wearing some basic protective gear and then move on to higher levels of protection as you develop your riding skills.
The first article of basic protective gear that everybody should always wear is an approved ATV helmet. If the helmet doesn't come with a built-in face shield, you should wear a pair of riding goggles to protect your eyes from small stones, dust and debris. A good pair of goggles should be scratch-resistant, shatterproof and fog-resistant. Make sure the goggles fit you properly and don't impair your vision in any way.
If you're riding through bushes and branches, you should protect your arms and legs from scratches by wearing a long-sleeved shirt, and pants. You should wear a pair of boots that cover your ankles and a sturdy but flexible pair of gloves to protect your hands. If you want to wear some extra protective gear you could add: a chest protector, motocross pants, boots and gloves, knee pads, wrist guards, neck guards, a kidney belt and elbow pads. You can find knee pads and chest protectors that can be worn under or over your clothing. These padded items are all designed to provide ATV riders with added protection in case they fall off their machines.
If you're worried about the cost, you should be able to find some good used riding gear at ATV and motorcycle stores, or in the classified section of an ATV riding magazine or your local newspaper. You may also be able to buy the equipment directly from people who have outgrown their gear. However, you should never buy a used helmet - it may look like it's in good shape, but it could have already taken a hard impact, and so it'd be useless to you.
You should also make sure that any extra padding you wear fits you properly and is comfortable, and doesn't hamper your ATV riding in any way.
