Boxing Head Gear and Mouthpieces
Protect your head and mouth whenever possible
Head gear
Head gear is worn in amateur bouts but not in professional matches. However, pro boxers make sure they wear the gear during sparring sessions. Boxing head gear is designed to fit over your head and is made of padded foam that absorbs the shock and cushions the impact of each punch received. Head gear is a vital piece of boxing equipment; it helps to ensure that boxers absorb the least amount of punishment possible.
When choosing head gear, look for something that is water-resistant and adjustable. This will stop the gear from becoming heavy and uncomfortable. It is also important that the head gear fit you properly so that it doesn't interfere with your vision and doesn't move around on your head during impact. Finally, head gear should be lightweight and breathable to keep you cool during a bout.
There are different styles of head gear, and they come with different levels of protection. Most boxing head gear is made out of vinyl or leather and also fully covers the ears, jaw, temples, cheeks, chin and forehead. Some types of head gear come with a face shield or cage. Because there are so many possible materials, styles, sizes and colors, it's important to make sure your head gear is approved by the organization you will be boxing for.
Mouthpieces
A mouthpiece is a mandatory article of boxing equipment for both professional and amateur boxing matches, and you should always wear a mouthpiece while sparring, too. A mouthpiece (also called a mouthguard) is essential to help prevent serious injuries to the mouth, teeth and jaw. A good mouthpiece should absorb the impact from punches, head butts and blows from shoulders or elbows and should reduce the chance of concussions from impacts to the lower jaw. The mouthpiece should also be designed to prevent the lower jaw from slamming into the base of the skull and brain.
Make sure that your mouthpiece fits properly and doesn't hamper your breathing (even though you should be breathing through your nose). Many mouthpieces enable you to boil and bite them for a custom fit. You can also have your dentist mold a mouthpiece to fit perfectly to the shape of your teeth. Don't buy a mouth piece based on price only - you may end up with an inferior model. A good-qquality mouthpiece could help save your life, so it's not a piece of equipment to skimp on.
Boxing mouthpieces are available in various materials, styles, sizes and colors.
